Florida Horse Training: Teaching horses to tie

by Jennifer on June 17, 2013

Question:
I would like to know how to teach my horses to stand tied. I have two Welsh Ponies one is seven and the other is five. Neither of them will stand tied. Most people don’t have any advice about it, they just say to tie them and leave them there. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated because I want to teach them to tie, I just don’t know how.

Answer:
Do your Yo-yo Game and Porcupine Game under duress… like having someone behind you opening and closing an umbrella. This adds a right brain factor and you can teach your horse to yield to pressure and keep thinking rather than getting startled and pulling back. Tying horses high, very high (like 8ft, a rafter or something) is the best way to help them get comfortable with being tied. Even if they pull back they have no leverage. Look up some other tips on this site to read other stories about tying horses and teaching them to become more patient.
